Tonight, in the vein of thought that I am completely unmotivated to study Japanese but really need to, I thought that I would try my hand at translating the prologue of the first novel that I read in Japanese.
Translation has been something that I have been dabbling in for awhile – through a previous part-time job and also occasionally now at the English school that I work for. Given my interest for it and my desire to share the stories that I am reading, this type of activity should be fun for me. I hope you can enjoy it!! The piece that I am translating tonight comes from 【世界から猫が消えたなら】”If Cats Disappeared from the World” by Genki Kawamura.
What if cats disappeared from the world?
Would the world and my life change?
What if I disappeared from the world?
Would tomorrow come as if nothing had occurred?
You will probably think that this is just a pitiful delusion but I hope that you can believe what I am about to write. I need to tell you about the events of the past seven days as mysterious as they may seem.
And before long, I will die. How has it come to this?
I would like to explain those reasons to you now. It’s surely going to be a long letter but I hope you will stay with me until the end.
This will be my first and last letter addressed to you.
That’s right, this is my final testament.
